originally built after the Norman conquest in 1066 by William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey The Castle was later acquired Hamelin Plantagenet who, with his son William, rebuilt the castle in stone. The resulting design of Conisbrough's keep is unique in England and it was this stone Castle that Sir Walter Scott used as the location for his 1819 novel Ivanhoe. By the end of the 19th century the ruins had become a tourist attraction. Taken over by English Heritage in 2008 Conisbrough Castle continues to be a tourist attraction.
